Gannan Medical University (GMU) is located in Ganzhou, a renowned revolutionary base area in Jiangxi province. Organized by the People's Government of Jiangxi Province, GMU is a full-time undergraduate medical university in Jiangxi province. Professor Han Jisheng, an academician of China Science Academy, works as the honorary president of GMU. GMU was founded as Ganxian Advanced Midwifery Vocational School of Jiangxi Province in 1941, developed to Ganxian Advanced Medical Vocational School in 1947 (Jiangxi Provincial level)，and Gannan Medical Technical School with college diploma authorization in 1958. And GMU was updated to an undergraduate university in 1988 and obtained the master's degree authorization from the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council in 2013. In 2019, GMU cooperated with Suzhou University and China Medical University to carry out doctoral training in clinical medicine sciences and basic medicine sciences. In 2021, GMU was approved as a key construction unit for the newly added doctoral degree granting right units in Jiangxi Province during the 14th 5-Year Plan period.

GMU boasts Huangjin Campus, Zhanggong Campus and Longnan Campus, covering more than 2,600 Mu. The total value of such equipment as teaching, scientific research and medical instruments is 0.3457 billion Yuan. GMU has 1,468,500 books and 2,272,100 electronic books. GMU has 3 affiliated hospitals (The First Affiliated Hospital of GMU is one of the first batch of 74 National Clinical Teaching and Training Demonstration Centers), 11 non-affiliated ones and 4 Teaching Hospitals. GMU currently has 17,930 students. There are 1117 full-time teachers, including 633 full-time ones with senior professional titles (covering 104 professors) and 422 ones with doctoral degrees. GMU boasts 3 members of the Teaching Steering Committee of the Ministry of Education of China, 94 teachers who enjoy the special allowance of the Jiangxi Province People’s Government and State Council, or are selected into the “Ganpo Talent 555 Project”, the Jinggang Scholars’ Project as the distinguished professors, and the provincial “Double-Thousand Plan” Project, 41 young and middle-aged backbone teachers, 1 renowned teacher and 1 team of Ideological and Political Teaching of the Ministry of Education of China, 4 provincial teaching teams, 8 provincial high-level undergraduate teaching teams, 26 doctoral supervisors and 829 master tutors.

GMU boasts 31 undergraduate majors, including 2 national distinguished majors (Clinical Medicine Sciences, Anesthesiology),　2 national first-class majors (Clinical Medicine Sciences, Nursing), 11 provincial first-class majors (Clinical Medicine Sciences, Applied Psychology,Pharmacy, Nursing, Anesthesiology, Medical Imaging, Medical Imaging Technology,Preventive Medicine, Medical Laboratory Technology, Rehabilitation Therapy, Public Utility Management), 4 provincial university distinctive majors (Public Affairs Administration, Nursing,　Preventive Medicine, Sports Human Science), 2 provincial first-class disciplines (Clinical Medicine Sciences ranking the top 1% of ESI, Public Health and Preventive Medicine), 4 first-level masters’ disciplines (Clinical Medicine Sciences,　Basic Medicine Sciences, Pharmacy, Biomedical Engineering), 7 masters’ professional degrees disciplines (Clinical Medicine Sciences, Nursing, Public Health, Applied Psychology, Medical Technology, Biology and Medicine, Pharmacology).

Intensifying connotative promotion and centering on Medicine, Science and Engineering, GMU has developed into a "Double First-Class" university under construction in Jiangxi Province, featuring distinctive school-running characteristics and advantages. GMU boasts 2 education training programs for outstanding doctors of the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Health of China, 1 Discipline Comprehensive Reform Pilot project for the Ministry of Education of China, 1 National Clinical Teaching and Training Demonstration Center, 1 National College Students Off-campus Practice Education Base, 1 second prize of National Teaching Achievement Award, 1 ideological and political demonstration course of the Ministry of Education, more than 190 provincial and ministerial undergraduate teaching projects (ranging from provincial excellent doctor education and training plan, provincial first-class undergraduate courses, provincial virtual simulation experiment project, to provincial ideological and political demonstration courses), as well as 11 provincial graduate high-quality courses and case construction projects. In 2007, GMU passed the evaluation of Undergraduate Teaching Level of the Ministry of Education of China. In 2013, GMU became the 13th one of the first batch universities to pass the Undergraduate Clinical Medicine Professional Certification of the Ministry of Education of China. In 2018, GMU passed the Undergraduate Teaching Assessment of the Ministry of Education of China. Nursing majors successfully passed the attestation of the Ministry of Education of China in 2023. So did the Clinical Medicine Sciences and Anesthesiology majors in 2024. Until 2024, the passing rate of the National Medical Licensing Examination for the Clinical Medicine Sciences majors’ graduates of GMU was higher than the national average level over the past 19 consecutive years.

GMU boasts fine teaching and scientific research environment. GMU has 1 Cardiovascular and Cerebrovascular Disease Prevention and Control Key Laboratory of the Ministry of Education of China, 1 National Key Laboratory for Major Disease New Drug Target Discovery and New Drug Creation under joint development，and 25 provincial research platforms, including the Central Soviet Area Medical History and Health China Strategic Research Center, the Key Laboratory of Cerebrovascular Pharmacology of Jiangxi Province, etc. GMU, the People’s Government of Zhanggong District of Ganzhou, as well as the high-level expert teams at home and abroad, have set up Gannan Institute of Innovation and Translational Medicine in Ganzhou, Jiangxi province. Over past years, GMU undertook more than 200 NSFC projects. GMU wins 1 National Science and Technology Progress Award, and 29 provincial and ministerial level scientific research achievement awards. Research papers concerned have been published in the Cell, Lancet oncology, European Urology, Hepatology, Nature Communications, etc

Vigorously promoting the educational tradition featuring "Hard Work, Science and Truth Pursuit", and adhering to the school motto spirit of "Building Morality & Decency, Pursuing Truth & Innovation", GMU adheres to the aim of serving the regional economic development based on talents training and scientific research. GMU has built its own characteristics and advantages in the fields of New Targets and Technologies for the Prevention and Treatment of Ischemic Cardiovascular and Cerebrovascular Diseases, Immunological Mechanism of Intestinal Inflammation, Cancer and Metabolic Diseases, the Development of the Health Care and Functional Products of Camellia Oleife, Research and Development of Chinese Herbal Medicine with Gannan Characteristics, the History of Medical and Health Care in the Central Soviet Area and the Strategic Study of Healthy China, etc. Until now, GMU has trained more than 110,000 medical talents, which they have become the health guardians of the people and made important contributions to the development of health undertakings of China.

GMU is the founding director unit of the "the Belt and Road Initiative" International Medical Education Alliance, and is one of the Chinese member universities of the "China Arab University 10+10 Cooperation Plan". GMU attaches great importance to international cooperation and exchange, and has established exchange and cooperation relations with more than 20 universities and scientific research institutions in the United States, Britain, Germany and other countries (regions). The First Affiliated Hospital of GMU has become the clinical teaching base of Lincoln Memorial University (LMU) in the United States. GMU and LMU respectively establish a teacher-student training base at the opposite country. GMU began recruiting overseas students in 2005 and the quality of training has been highly praised the country of origin.
