GMUPCC Actively Carries out the Psychological Assistance Service for the Fight against the COVID-19

    In order to control or alleviate the psychosocial effect resulting from the COVID-19, GMU Psychological Counseling Center (GMUPCC) actively carried out the psychological assistance service for the fight against the COVID-19 the first time for all faculty and students, giving a display to the speed to the fight against the COVID-19.

    On January 29, the GMUPCC actively responded to the call of the State Council to set up a psychological assistance hotline in response to the pandemic. At the first time, the center organized 4 mental health education majors’ teachers and 103 psychological counseling volunteers to constitute a team of psychological assistance hotline. After the online psychological assistance training, the center offered online psychological counseling services for teachers and students with negative emotions caused by the pandemic. As of February 17, more than 40 people received online psychological assistance. Those who asked for consultation mainly gave birth to anxiety, panic, worry and other emotions caused by the pandemic.

    Meanwhile, in order to comprehensively know the psychological crisis situation of GMU students from the perspective of COVID-19, the center conducted a psychological crisis survey on more than 10,000 students through questionnaires from January 29 to February 3, and screened out 194 students who might have psychological crisis. For the 194 students, the psychological crisis 4-level intervention network was launched immediately to carry out psychological intervention to help students to recover psychological stability. The teachers did a good job of follow-up observation.
    The center also promoted the psychological prevention knowledge against COVID-19 through the We-Chat Subscription and the 4-level QQ group. The We-Chat Subscription published 27 articles that were read by more than 1,000 people.
    “GMU Psychology Pamphlet against the COVID-19 Pneumonia” was compiled to scientifically introduce the psychological means of fight against the COVID-19.
The course of "Major Public Health Related Psychology" was recorded and it was available to students across China.

    At the same time, the center actively participated in social psychological assistance. Tang Hong, head of the Department of Psychology, led 15 psychology teachers to provide free online psychological assistance to the public through the "Psychological Counseling" Section of the Ganfutong Platform. The working hours were from 08:00 to 23:00 every day. Since the platform was online, the section was visited by thousands of people. The consultants were in the spirit of respect, acceptance, empathy and companionship, and they help citizens to dredge negative emotions.
