On the morning of June 24, the 8th School of Basic Medicine Sciences (SBMS) Sub-forum for Rongjiang Forum was held in the Huangjin Campus. Dr. Xie Fuhua from the SBMS delivered a lecture entitled "Warburg Effect, the Achilles' Heel of Tumor?", which was attended by many teachers and students.
Xie Fuhua began with the Greek myth Achilles and his ankle, and extended that to "Warburg effect" and “the ankle” of the tumor. "Warburg effect" is an inefficient but beneficial aerobic glycolysis process in tumor cells. It can not only provide energy for tumor cells, but also provide a large amount of lactic acid and three carbon substances. Lactic acid can help tumor cells tolerate drugs, avoid apoptosis and immune escape, and three carbon substances can transport carbon sources for tumor cells' rapid proliferation. However, M2 pyruvate kinase (pkm2) plays a very important role in the "Warburg effect" of tumors. Xie Fuhua introduced how his research group targeted pkm2 for anti-tumor research.
At the meeting, he interacted with everyone and seriously answered the questions raised by teachers and students, building the warm atmosphere.
