At around 3:30 a.m. on February 7, two Pakistani international students of Gannan Medical University (GMU), YOUSAF KHAN and MUHAMMAD RAFEEULLAH JAWAAD, were on a trip to Shanghai. When they were at the exit passage of Shanghai Songjiang Railway Station, they found an elderly man suddenly collapse due to illness.
The situation was critical! Sensing the urgency, YOUSAF KHAN and MUHAMMAD RAFEEULLAH JAWAAD remained calm. They informed the on-site police of their status as medical students from GMU and, with permission, immediately rushed to check on the old man. They found that the old man was in a state of blurred consciousness, with his breathing stopped, pulse extremely weak, and lips cyanotic. Then, they promptly utilized the first-aid knowledge they had learned at GMU to carry out the rescue. YOUSAF KHAN immediately performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and mouth-to-mouth artificial respiration on the old man, while MUHAMMAD RAFEEULLAH JAWAAD assisted by observing the old man's condition. After four rounds of CPR, the old man finally slowly regained consciousness and breathing. During the rescue process, the two international students carefully observed and stayed by the old man's side, buying precious time for the rescue. Eventually, the old man was smoothly taken to the hospital for further treatment by an ambulance. The heroic act of GMU international students and their professional rescue skills were highly praised by the on-site policemen, the public, and medical staff.
After the rescue, YOUSAF KHAN said that this was his first time rescuing a patient, and he felt extremely happy and proud. He also stated that saving lives is the bounden duty of doctors and medical students, and he would step forward whenever and wherever needed. MUHAMMAD RAFEEULLAH JAWAAD said that the education from GMU enabled him to remain calm in this emergency and that he was glad to have the opportunity to use what he had learned to help others.
For a long time, GMU has always emphasized the cultivation of international students' comprehensive qualities, including both moral integrity and professional competence. The heroic deeds of the two students have demonstrated the good mental outlook and solid first-aid skills of GMU international students.
