On the morning of June 10, Professor Walter Luyten, a distinguished pharmacologist, biologist, and PhD supervisor from KU Leuven (Belgium), was invited to deliver a special academic report titled "Bioactive Natural Products from Plants" at the 14th Pharmaceutical Sub-forum of the Rongjiang Forum. Over 100 faculty members and student representatives from the School of Pharmacy, research centers, and related disciplines attended it.

During the lecture, Professor Walter Luyten systematically expounded on screening techniques for bioactive natural products. He detailed how his team had screened more than a dozen components with significant inhibitory activity against Vibrio spp. bacteria and White Spot Virus from nearly 100 plant extracts, validating their efficacy through in vivo experiments. Using activity-guided isolation techniques, the team further identified multiple bioactive monomers and revealed their multi-target mechanisms of action, including regulating immunity, inhibiting oxidative stress, and direct anti-pathogen effects. These findings provide crucial theoretical and practical support for natural drug research and development.
In the interactive session, attendees engaged in a lively discussion with Professor Walter Luyten on topics such as standardized preparation of plant extracts, mechanistic analysis of active components, and challenges in translating laboratory research into industrial applications. The event fostered a vibrant academic atmosphere, with participants noting they had gained profound insights from the exchange.
This lecture provided faculty and students with a valuable opportunity to deepen their understanding of natural product research and applications, and is of significance for promoting international scientific collaboration and disciplinary construction in related fields.
